Redbud Corner – a Christian novel
Redbud Corner - a Christian novel
Ah Ni (aka Annie) has left China for the first time to study at an American university in the quaint little town of Redbud Corner. An only child of a widowed mother, this opportunity to study in America is her one chance at being successful in life—and she has placed all her eggs in that basket.

Some local people take her under their wings and begin to introduce her to life in the small town. One man she meets early on dubs her “Annie” and the name sticks. She also meets a cantankerous elderly neighbor that she bonds with and a lonely little girl who captures her heart. Their lives begin to weave together in a way that changes all of them.

Most annoying, however, is a young man who takes an interest in her. This would be okay except he’s a Christian, something that definitely doesn’t fit into her ideas for success in the future. Will Ah Ni let this man and his strange religion into her life, or will she choose the successful man back home in China?

REDBUD CORNER, formerly titled AH NI, will make you laugh and cry as you follow this enchanting young woman through the most important decisions she will ever make.

A Redbud tree was dedicated to The Grove of Honor Friday, Mar. 16, in honor of Fort Bragg’s Arbor Day Celebration. Fort Bragg was also received the Tree City USA award for the 7th consecutive year.

Each tree planted at the field has it’s own unique and historical value to the area. The Redbud is native to North Carolina and it’s flowers’ pedals are shaped like hearts. Franklin D. Roosevelt is known to have loved the tree and planted them at both his “Little White House” in Warm Springs, Georgia, and his estate in Hyde Park, New York.

Two days prior to the Arbor Day Celebration, Soldiers from the 5th Sqd., 73rd Calvary, spent about five hour cleaning up and landscaping The Grove of Honor, which has been neglected over the years.

“Looking at the project in the beginning and how (shameful) it looked and the fact that it shouldn’t have looked the way it did, it’s great seeing the work we did,” explained Spc. Brandon Gallardo, 5-73rd Cav.

The Field of Honor is a special place near Womack Army Medical Center and adjacent to Albritton Middle School on All American Freeway, that honors all the Medal of Honor recipients from North Carolina.

“Seeing the progress we made on the field makes me feel great knowing that we took the time to do this,” agreed Pfc. Nikolay Titon, 5-73rd Cav.

Maj. Robert Nesbit, executive officer of 5-73rd Cav., ended the ceremony with a surprise announcement of adopting the area and ensuring that it stays a beautiful place for the many servicemembers it honors.

“At the end of the day, these Soldiers work very hard on a day-to-day basis, but we find it important to put in that same hard work in giving back to our community,” said Nesbit.

The Lavender Twist Weeping Redbud, ‘Cercis canadensis "Covey", also known as Twisted Lavender Redbud, is a new variety of Redbud that is sure to attract the eye. The reddish-purple bud opens to a rosy lavender-pink flower in early spring. The umbrella shaped tree accentuates the weeping, twisted branches tipping towards the ground. They flower in early spring and bloom for 2 to 3 weeks. The shape of the fruit looks like a pea pod. The pods are 2-3” and are brown. The seed pods develop in October and usually stay on throughout the winter and adding winter interest. Leaves are heart shaped, when emerging in the spring are reddish-purple changing to a dark lustrous green in the summer and then to a yellow fall color. This tree is a great specimen plant and perfect for a small protected area in the landscape.
